Oliver and Isla have topped the list of Queensland’s most popular baby names for 2023.

Isla was the most frequent name for 285 newborn girls in 2023, while Oliver retained first place for names for boys (451) – for the 11th year in a row.

The combination of Oliver and Isla holding the top spots previously occurred in 2021, highlighting the ongoing popularity of both names with parents in Queensland.

Isla was followed in popularity by Charlotte, Amelia, Harper and Olivia.

Noah, Henry, Theodore and Hudson took the remaining spots in the top five names for boys.

Victoria released its list of top baby names on Friday with Oliver topping the list for boys names for the tenth year in a row. Amelia was the most popular name for girls.

Queensland registered 58,959 births in 2023 – the third-highest of Australian states and territories, and almost 3,800 fewer than the previous year (62,740).

The regions with the highest registered births, identified by postcode, include Toowoomba (1,442), followed by Coomera (1,290) and Beenleigh (1,139).

According to the annual summary, there were 6,004 different first names given for boys, and 6,922 for girls across the state.

“Identifying 6,922 distinct first names for girls and 6,004 for boys born during 2023 really reflects the remarkable growing population and cultural diversity of Queensland,” the Queensland attorney general, Yvette D’Ath, said.

“It is particularly incredible that Oliver, a name common in medieval times, continues to see such popularity this many years in a row – and is the most frequently chosen name in general by a large margin.”

D’Ath said many of the top boys’ names had remained stable over the last decade, while there had been a slightly greater diversity in girls’ names across the same period.

She said the entire top 10 names for boys in 2022 had reappeared in 2023’s top 10 but in a slightly different order.

“While we celebrate these joyous occasions for those in 2023, it is also the perfect time to remind prospective parents to register new babies within 60 days to gain a birth certificate, which will help them access essential healthcare, government and childcare services,” D’Ath said.

Oliver was also the most popular name for boys in 2023 in Victoria, Tasmania and Western Australia, while Isla was also the most popular girls’ name in WA.
