'Oldest man in Wirral' dies age 111

A 111-year-old tripped and fell in his own home weeks before he died, an inquest heart.

One of the oldest residents in Wirral, Siu Kiu Chau, of Cumberland Avenue in Prenton was rushed to hospital following an unwitnessed fall on April 21 this year. But after complications, his health deteriorated and the retired grocery store owner died at Arrowe Park Hospital on May 18.

An inquest was held into his death at the Gerard Majella Courthouse where it was heard the 111-year-old had been born in Hong Kong on December 8, 1911. Area coroner Anita Bhardwaj said he was a man who had a "number of comorbidities including heart failure".

In a record of the inquest, she wrote: "On April 21, 2023, Siu was admitted to Arrowe Park Hospital following an unwitnessed fall in his kitchen at his home address when he tripped and fell forward. Siu was found to have sustained a left sided neck of femur fracture."

Despite needing treatment, Mr Chau was not suitable for general anaesthetic due to his age and gave consent for spinal anaesthesia. Post operatively however, he developed complications and he died on May 18.

Ms Bhardwaj said: "The injuries sustained from the fall have resulted in Siu’s death. There is no evidence to suggest the fall was anything other than an accident."

The cause of death was concluded as an accident. The 111-year-old was 204 days away from his 112th birthday. Being born in December 1911 meant Mr Chau lived through two world wars.
