Old Toxteth pub with Ringo Starr mural share exciting Beatles plans

The Empress pub in Toxteth is set to be transformed into a Beatles themed hotel, complete with a mural of Beatles drummer Ringo Starr on the side of the building.

The pub, on High Park Street, is located close to the childhood home of Ringo Starr.

Joe McCarthy, one of the owners of Inservice Property Group, has said that the plan is to make the upstairs of the building a hotel, and downstairs a Beatles themed gift shop.

Joe told the ECHO : "It was originally going to be the Beatles Sergeant Peppers album cover on the side of the building, but as Ringo is from the area and the building is more related to him, we have kept it more Ringo themed.

"The plan with it is to have the upstairspart a hotel, and downstairs a Beatles themed gift shop.

"The building across the road is going to be getting some artwork too 'Peace and Love' - two of Ringo's major values."

He added: "There are about 10-20 tour busses and taxis that stop outside the building every day to take photos, as it's on the Beatles tour route.

"We are going to be adding a donation collection point to the building also, where people have the option to donate to support local charities and communities.

"All going well, the building should be up and running for summer this year."

The pub is a destination for Beatles fans taking in the city, with tourists frequently visiting the L8 landmark.

This is due to The Empress appearing on the cover of Ringo's first solo album 'Sentimental Journey' which was released in March 1970.

Artist John Culshaw told the ECHO : "I love painting The Beatles - I am a big fan of them.

"I think as well as changing the world of music and becoming idols, they have left their city with an industry that people can earn a crust from and really put Liverpool on the world map."

He added: "I think the piece will be finished in around 10 days time."

John said: "This was not the first design for the building.

"There were designs of all the Beatles to be featured but, after a couple of meetings with the owner of the building, we decided to make Ringo the main feature of the artwork because of his link to the building and to the area."
