Old Edinburgh police box serving Brazilian crepes is one of capital's 'hidden treasures'

Edinburgh is dotted with beautiful old police boxes - and many of them have been revitalised and put to good use.

Earlier this year, we reported on an abandoned police box in the city's west end being converted into Constable Coffee and it's been hugely popular since it launched to serve speciality coffee and homemade bakes.

The likes of Cheapshot Coffee and The Drip do similar, both from police boxes which would have otherwise likely been left to go to rot and ruin.

And one transformed 'tardis' - self-described as 'Edinburgh's Brazil-in-a-Box' has become somewhat of a city situation since serving up the first of its many brilliant Brazilian crepes back in 2010.

Tupiniquim has been dishing out 'a decade of sunny attitudes and delicious crepes' from the beautiful Green Police Box on Lauriston Place, with Latin American flavours including grilled chicken breast marinated in mango sauce with mozzarella, avocado, sweet corn, cherry tomatoes and spinach; and roasted butternut squash, sweet potatoes, spinach, avocado, tomatoes, toasted peacans and mixed seeds.

Of course, there's sweet options too, including the likes of lemon and sugar, Nutella and the Old Jamaica, featuring Belgian chocolate, rum soaked raisins, fresh orange zest and juice, cinnamon and candied ginger.

All the crepes have Brazilian produce at their core with the batter made from a blend of rice, tapioca starch, maize, buckwheat and potato flour with added eggs and milk.

And so popular is this one-of-a-kind place, it's rated one of the best Quick Bite restaurants in Edinburgh, according to TripAdvisor. From 282 reviews, Tupiniquim scores an excellent 5 star rating, with some customers hailing the crepes at the 'best street food' in the capital.

One review reads: "I last visited this Brazilian creperie about three years ago when I was back visiting family for the festival with an American friend. When I knew I’d be back this year and nearby I marched my partner to here for lunch.

"My memories of the fantastic food and fabulous Brazilian hospitality are second to none."

Another said: "We followed recommendations on Tripadvisor and we were not disappointed. How is it possible to create such wonderfully tasty food, uniquely presented from friendly staff?"

And one person urged others not to leave Edinburgh before popping by the police box.

They commented: "Whilst studying in Edinburgh I ate at Tupiniquim regularly and I was SO happy when I visited today to find it was still in business!!

"You can’t visit Edinburgh and NOT eat at this place. The crepes themselves are delicious and the (very generous) fillings cannot be faulted.

"Fernando and Gardenia are so passionate and friendly which makes the experience even better!!"

And there is so much love for this place, one customer has even described the unique eatery as one of Edinburgh's 'hidden treasures'.

Their review read: "Loved the gluten free options in Edinburgh but this little hut topped them all. All crepes are GF but again who would know. Savoury, crispy and just divine.

"The owner is a coeliac so everything is GF. The best crepes ever!!!! Hubby loved his and he normally can’t stand anything GF.

"My heart sings for the experience."

And another satisfied diner, who wasn't the only one, hailed Tupiniquim for serving 'the best crepes ever', adding: "Wonderful fresh food. Best crepes I’ve ever had.

"The owners are so nice. My favourite place!"
