Oko-Flex 'knows the reason' he was replaced, Swansea City's big guns given jolt and Matt Grimes sits in gantry

Swansea City have just two games to go before the World Cup break following their 2-2 draw with Wigan Athletic.

Here are the key talking points to emerge from the contest with the Latics.

Oko-Flex substitution explained

Russell Martin suggested that Armstrong Oko-Flex's work out of possession was the reason for his half-time withdrawal during the draw with Wigan.

The West Ham loanee was handed his first start for the club and was the brightest spark for the hosts in the first half. However, he was replaced by Jamie Paterson for the second half, with Swansea dominating after the restart following a sloppy start to proceedings from the outset.

And Martin says Oko-Flex is aware of why he was substituted at the break. "I was happy with moments," said Martin of the 20-year-old's display.

"We were very young playing against a very experienced team. Armstrong has been really good coming off the bench and I felt he deserved a start. Sometimes it goes well and sometimes it doesn't go so well.

"Some people will look at some of the bits he did and will be wondering why he came off. Armstrong will know the reason, that's the most important bit. He will learn from it and get better.

"We just need to keep trying to develop him the same as the other players because he's playing in a very different way at a different level to what he has been. He just needs to keep doing what he's asked and he'll be more than fine.

"When we have such clarity in what we want in can be quite frustrating sometimes when we don't get it. We've made a few changes to the team recently because of that.

"We just need to keep developing Armstrong's understanding of what we want from him, especially out of possession."

Big guns need to deliver

Joel Piroe netted his fifth goal of the campaign to earn the Swans a share of the spoils against Leam Richardson's outfit.

However, the Swans' biggest goal threats from Martin's debut campaign are way off the pace they set last season. Piroe, Paterson and Michael Obafemi scored 45 times between them in all competitions last term, although they have just eight goals combined after 20 matches so far this season.

And while Martin is pleased with the way goals have been shared around the squad so far in his second campaign at the club, the 36-year-old is determined to see his big guns hit the goal trail.

"We've got three guys who had 50-odd goal contributions last year and have probably only contributed about 10 or 12 between them so far this season," explained Martin.

"Joel Piroe will score a lot of goals. If Michael listens to what we want from him and what made him really deadly last season, if he starts really sticking to that detail then he'll score goals.

"Pato will get fit and he'll start contributing, I've got no doubt about that. The penalty moment between him and Kyle [Naughton] was fantastic.

"If you're going to be really serious you need someone who is scoring a lot. It will happen. I'm really pleased the goals have been shared around and we've looked a threat from set-pieces.

"We're not overly concerned but it would be nice if someone started scoring every week."

Captain's Wigan role

Suspended Matt Grimes assisted Swansea's analysts during the 2-2 draw with Wigan.

The captain was unavailable to feature against the Lancashire club after collecting his fifth booking of the season in the 1-0 defeat at Preston North End on Tuesday night.

It brought an end to the central midfielder's remarkable run of playing 67 full Championship matches in a row while he had also featured in each of his side's last 104 league games prior to the contest with Wigan.

"He watched in the gantry today which was great," Martin said of Grimes. "He helped Ben the analyst because he has such a brilliant understanding of the game for us.

"Hopefully he doesn't do that again, or very often! Obviously he's a huge player for us. I think he would have helped us a lot today in the difficult moments.

"Overall the players dealt with that, they came through today and they'll be better for today. They will learn a lot from today."

Grimes is available to feature against Birmingham City on Tuesday night.
