Oisin McConville set to take Wicklow reins

Oisin McConville has confirmed he is set to take over as the Wicklow football manager.

It will be McConville’s first foray into senior inter-county management.

McConville (46) was part of the Ray Dempsey ticket beaten for the Mayo job by Kevin McStay.

Armagh and Crossmaglen All-Ireland winner McConville helped to guide his club to an Ulster title in 2015.

Alan Costello and Gary Duffy took over as Wicklow interim managers after Colin Kelly stepped away during the season, pointing to work commitments.

There are now just six inter-county football posts up for grabs: Donegal, Monaghan, Roscommon, Wexford, Westmeath and Limerick.

McConville told the Belfast Telegraph: "Having sampled life as a player, coach, pundit and analyst, I feel now is a good time to try and turn my hand to inter-county management.

"My immediate task is to try and take Inniskeen as far as I can in the Monaghan championship. Having said that, Wicklow will then get my undivided attention.

"I know that some people will think that life in Division Four may not be too difficult but I know that there are some decent teams in there and Wicklow will get nothing easy."

Meanwhile, Don Connellan has emerged as the frontrunner to replace Anthony Cunnningham as Roscommon manager.

Former Roscommon player, Connellan, helped Moycullen to their first ever Galway title in 2020 and was part of Maurice Sheridan’s management team for NUI Galway’s Sigerson Cup win earlier this year.
