Ohio State quarterback Will Howard made history in the College Football Playoff championship game by setting a new record for consecutive completions. Howard started the game on fire, connecting on his first 13 passes against Notre Dame on Monday night. He tied the record late in the second quarter with a 20-yard completion to Carnell Tate on third-and-7. Howard then broke the record with a 15-yard pass to Jeremiah Smith two plays later.
Howard's impressive streak came to an end when Notre Dame safety Xavier Watts managed to break up his pass intended for TreVeyon Henderson near the goal line. The previous record for consecutive completions in a CFP championship game was held by Alabama's Mac Jones, who had 12 completions in a row against Ohio State in the 2021 title game.
By halftime, Howard had completed 14 of 15 passes for 144 yards, including touchdown throws of 8 yards to Smith and 6 yards to Quinshon Judkins. Howard had been in excellent form leading up to the championship game, boasting a completion rate of 73.8% with 919 yards, six touchdowns, and two interceptions in the Buckeyes' first three CFP games.
