Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day spoke with Fox Sports college football analyst Joel Klatt regarding the targeting rule.
Day thinks that the rule should be common sense. Targeting reviews are often not cut and dry and the rule could use a little bit more clarity.
Joel Klatt made sure to clarify that he was not questioning Ryan Day regarding Georgia defender Javon Bullard’s hit on Ohio State star wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. in the College Football Playoff. Day was not happy about the outcome of that specific call.
Almost all of player safety is pinned on defensive players the way football is played now. Years ago, if you didn’t want your wide receiver to suffer a big hit, then you wouldn’t throw a risky pass over the middle.
Modern college football is different, in a good way, than it was 20 years ago. Player health and safety should be the top priority for college football and the targeting rule has cleaned up the sport a fair amount. Players should not be head hunting.

No matter what Joel Klatt says, a big reason why his brought up the targeting rule is because of Javon Bullard’s hit in the Peach Bowl. Targeting reviews are often incredibly hard to predict.
Here’s what Buckeyes Wire had to say regarding the targeting rule:
The problem comes with the inconsistency of calling the foul. It’s a judgment call that happens in a split second and even with instant replay, slow motion doesn’t always give an accurate look.
Hopefully, something will be done moving forward, that will continue to keep player safety at the forefront and at the same time figure out a way to make the ruling more consistent.
We agree that the rule should be called more consistently. However, it is unclear what aspect of the rule Ohio State’s Ryan Day wants to alter.
The Georgia defense have been extremely good at tackling in recent years and frankly the Bulldogs have not had to have many targeting reviews because of this.
