Ohio State hockey beats Penn State in Game 1 of Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal

There are a lot of Ohio State teams in tournament action this weekend, and one of them is the men’s hockey team. The Buckeyes made it into the Big Ten Hockey Tournament as the No. 3 seed and are hosting No. 6 seed Penn State in a best-of-three-game series for the right to advance to the semifinals.

Game One was Friday night at the Schottenstein Center, and so far so good. Ohio State made quick and easy work of the Nittany Lions, cruising to a 5-1 victory to put Penn State in a must-win situation Saturday.

The Buckeyes scored the first four goals of the contest starting with David Burnside finding the back of the net off of a nifty feed from Stephen Halliday just under five minutes into the contest.

There would be no more scoring in the first period, but Ohio State went on a three-goal scoring barrage in the second stanza. Tyler Duke started it during a 4-on-4 situation with 15:27 left in the period. Tate Singleton and Stephen Halliday assisted on the score.

Cam Theising scored just 44 seconds later on an assist from Mason Lohrei to make it 3-0.

Cole McWard would finish the scoring in the second period on a power play goal that was set up by Jake Wise and Stephen Halliday (once again) to make it 4-0.

Penn State would finally score on a power play with 9:00 left in the game before Stephen Halliday got a goal himself for his fourth point of the night for the final 5-1 score.

The Buckeyes and Nittany Lions will be back at it again on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. ET. A win and OSU moves on to the semifinals. A loss means a winner-take-all contest on Sunday.
