Ohio State baseball drops second straight to Penn State

Things are going south quickly for the Ohio State baseball team. After starting the year with some encouraging showings, things have hit a major snag in the Big Ten. That continued on Saturday with a 7-2 loss to Penn State, the Buckeyes’ second-straight loss to the Nittany Lions.

Penn State struck first with two runs in the bottom of the second inning and OSU couldn’t get anything going early, failing to register its first hit until the fourth inning on a Kade Kern single, and finally scoring a run in the top of the fifth inning when Trey Lipsey was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Suddenly, the score was tied 2 to 2 and it looked like the two teams would be in a battle.

But that was the highlight of the game for Ohio State.

The Buckeyes gave up seven runs after motoring through some pitching changes in the seventh inning to more or less put the game away. OSU couldn’t muster any more offense and the game ended 7-2.

The loss drops Ohio State’s overall record to 20-19 and a pretty unassuming 3-11 record in the Big Ten. The Nittany Lions and Buckeyes will play the third game of the series Sunday in Happy Valley at 1 p.m.
