Growing up in the Midwest, there was nothing quite like getting the news that school was canceled due to inclement weather. Of course, for those of us over the age of 30, we didn’t have the luxury of a text message, we had to get up and watch the news scroll a ticker at the bottom of the TV like it was the NFL draft.
At any rate, it looks like a polar vortex will be hitting Ohio early next week and one school superintendent decided to have a little fun with it. Schools will already be closed on January 20 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. With Ohio State playing in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game later that evening it’s almost certain, many Ohio school kids will be staying up late in hopes of celebrating a Buckeye title.
School Superintendent, Dr. Cameron M. Ryba of Strongsville, (a suburb of Cleveland) sent a message to families in the district addressing the anticipated frigid temperatures and the possibility of a Tuesday school closure. He shared that if school were to be closed, the robocall system would not reach Notre Dame and Michigan fans so they would unfortunately not know if school was canceled or not … or maybe would have to get up early to watch the ticker like those of us who grew up in ancient times.

Good for you Dr. Ryba! Excellent job of having a little fun at the expense of rival fans. For most kids growing up in the great state of Ohio, not too much could top an Ohio State championship paired with an unexpected day off of school.
