Ohio attorney and former state Sen. Ben Espy, who passed away on January 4 at the age of 81, will be honored for his remarkable contributions to the state and its capital city of Columbus. Espy, a trailblazer in Ohio politics, made history as the first Black person to hold key leadership positions, breaking racial barriers and leaving a lasting impact on the community.

During his tenure as president pro tem of the Columbus city council and minority leader of the Ohio Senate, Espy earned respect from members of both parties for his integrity and dedication to public service. His efforts extended beyond politics, as he spearheaded initiatives such as the city's Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration and the Columbus Youth Corps, which aimed to instill ethics and professionalism in young people.

Espy's commitment to serving the community was further exemplified through projects like 'The Job Show,' a cable program that helped individuals find employment and was recognized as the best municipal cable program in the U.S. in the 1980s. His daughter, Laura Espy-Bell, highlighted the countless lives her father touched through his work.

Mayor Andrew Ginther, U.S. Rep. Joyce Beatty, and Columbus City Council President Shannon Hardin all praised Espy's legacy of leadership and advocacy for justice and equality. His impact resonates throughout Columbus, with Hardin acknowledging Espy as a foundational figure for many current leaders.

Despite facing adversity, including a life-altering accident in 1984 that resulted in the loss of part of his leg, Espy remained resilient and continued his service to the community. His daughter emphasized his strength and determination in overcoming challenges, with his story serving as a reminder that obstacles can be turned into opportunities for greater impact.

Gov. Mike DeWine ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of Espy on the day of his funeral, recognizing his significant contributions to the state of Ohio. As friends, colleagues, and community members gather to celebrate his life, Ben Espy's legacy of service, leadership, and resilience will continue to inspire future generations.
