Ohio Governor signed legislation on Wednesday that enhances parental rights regarding their child's health care and education. The new law, known as the 'Parents' Bill of Rights,' allows parents to be informed when schools are making changes to their child's health care or planning to teach lessons involving 'sexuality content.' Parents have the option to opt out of these health care services or lessons.
In addition to this, the legislation also includes a provision that mandates school districts to permit students to leave school for religious instruction during the day.
This move by the Republican-backed bill reflects a growing trend among conservatives who are increasingly critical of public schools, accusing them of being too liberal in their approach to sensitive topics, particularly related to gender identity.
However, critics of the Ohio bill argue that it could potentially compromise the privacy of LGBTQ+ students by requiring schools to disclose their private health care discussions with parents.
