Sunderland fans have been reacting after Jermain Defoe posted an intriguing Instagram story amid potential transfer interest from the Black Cats.
The 39-year-old has been linked with a move to Wearside ever since he left Rangers earlier in the January transfer window, with Oxford United, Portsmouth and Charlton Athletic also keen.
There had been reports that Sunderland were finalising a move for Defoe on deadline day despite the departure of Lee Johnson, however, nothing yet has been agreed.
But Defoe has since posted an imagine with the caption 'happy days', which has intrigued the Black Cats faithful given the speculation surrounding a possible return to the Stadium of Light.
Johnson was sacked after Sunderland's 6-0 defeat at Bolton Wanderers on Saturday, as they dropped out of the automatic promotion places in the meantime.
Although Sunderland haven't currently got a permanent manager at the helm, Defoe continues to be linked with a move to Wearside and there has been reports that he could sign on a player/coach basis.
Nevertheless, the Black Cats fans have seemed to get excited with Defoe's Instagram story, with one supporter saying 'stop teasing us', while another said 'welcome home JD'.
Here is what some had to say on social media.
