'Oh my goodness!' - Phil Thompson has spotted 'tremendous' talent in Liverpool youth team

Liverpool great Phil Thompson believes his old club have a wonderful player on their hands in the shape of Ben Doak.

The 17-year-old, who joined Liverpool in a £600,000 deal from Celtic last summer, hasn’t taken long to make his mark on Merseyside. Making his debut for Liverpool under-18s on August 13, the teenager’s first-team bow arrived only three months later against Derby County in a Carabao Cup tie at Anfield.

Three days later, he was on the bench for the Reds’ Premier League match with Southampton and followed up this whirlwind period by signing his first professional contract with the club. Doak then became the youngest Scottish footballer to feature in the Premier League when he came on for Darwin Nunez against Aston Villa at Villa Park in December.

Due to Doak's rapid rise, there is a lot of buzz around the youngster, and Thompson, who has watched him at youth and senior level, is every bit as excited about watching the forward develop.

Speaking to The Herald, he said: "What do I think of Ben Doak? Oh my goodness! What a player!

"I have done quite a few of the youth games for LFCTV, and every time I have seen him, he has been outstanding. One of the great things about Ben is that he just loves football. He has got a wonderful attitude.

"But he is aggressive, and for a forward, that is a great attribute to have. He has also got unbelievable pace, he can provide assists, and he has got goals in him.

"You just look at him and think: 'Wow!' He has had such a rapid rise to fame this season. He has played in the first team this season, which is quite astonishing. I just hope he has got a nice feel for it because he is a tremendous talent."
