Sebastien Ogier has said claiming a record-extending 10th Monte Carlo Rally victory means “the world” - but has “no idea” if it will be his final appearance at the historic event.
Ogier emerged from a dramatic last day to claim victory by 18.5seconds over Toyota team-mate Elfyn Evans at the famous asphalt rally, which opened the 2025 World Rally Championship campaign.
The eight-time world champion once again lived up to his ‘Monte Master’ tagline having been the most successful driver in the event's history. Ogier’s first triumph was in 2009 when the event was part of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge.
Since then he has tasted victory in Monte Carlo a further nine times under the WRC umbrella taking wins in 2014 to 2019, 2021 and 2023. The success has been split across the Peugeot, Volkswagen, Citroen, Ford and Toyota brands.
An emotional Ogier dedicated the win to his late uncle that passed away around this time last year, while hinting that the 2025 rally could be his last.
“I don’t know where to start, what a weekend,” said Ogier. “I think I have my lucky star with me this weekend.
“It was my uncle who we lost one year ago. I am sure he was bringing me everything and this one is for him.
“Quite a few moments this weekend…like I said my lucky star is there. I don’t know what it means but for me the world. I have no idea if this will be my last one. It would be a good place to stop.”
While Ogier’s Monte Carlo future is yet to be determined, the 41-year-old is set to contest a partial WRC campaign with Toyota once again this year.
When pressed on his stage end comments about his future, he added: “Hopefully not, but I don’t know [if this is my last Monte Carlo Rally]
“I just want to enjoy this moment in this incredible series. I will obviously do some more rallying this season in WRC but I don’t know about next year.
“I don’t want to make any plans and of course, if I am able to stay at this same level it is a shame to stop. On the other hand I’m closer to the end [of my career] than the start.
“It is difficult to find the words in this moment but obviously I couldn’t be happier today. I repeat this story often but Monte Carlo has always been the one event that gave me the dream to be a rally driver one day.
“Since I was a kid I was watching it and it started in 2009 here winning my first attempt and back then it really felt like a dream come true. But now it is 10 times I have come here and picked up the big trophy, I’m still as happy as 2009.”
Toyota team principal Jari-Matti Latvala described Ogier’s 10th Monte Carlo win as a “unique” achievement.
“It means you have been at your best in your 20’s, 30’s and 40’s and that’s quite a unique achievement for a sportsman to be at the top level for such a long time,” said Latvala.
“That is also why he is world champion, he has some special skills that the others don’t have.”
