Ofsted calls for improvements as curriculum 'hinders' children's progress

A Merseyside primary school has been given one of the lowest ratings after its latest Ofsted inspection.

Our Lady of Walsingham Primary School in Netherton was given a 'requires improvement' rating by Ofsted. In a report published on 16 June 2022 it was found that improvement was needed in the quality of education, personal development, and in leadership and management.

In the two-day visit to the site, the inspectors found that "too few pupils can read confidently by the end of key stage one" and that pupils have a limited understanding of "important" issues such as "democracy and diversity".

The report stated that while the curriculum for some subjects is well planned in others it is "not as far along". The report said: "In these subjects, leaders’ expectations of what pupils, including children in the early years, should know are not clear enough.

"This hinders teachers from presenting content in a logical order so as to help children and pupils gain the key knowledge they need to progress well over time. It also prevents leaders from checking that pupils know and remember their earlier learning.

"In addition, some subject leaders do not provide support for teachers to develop their subject knowledge and deliver curriculums well. This hampers teachers in their efforts to design learning effectively. Consequently, pupils do not achieve as well as they should in these subjects."

The report said that while improvements needed to be made pupils behave well in school and that have a "positive attuite" towards learning. However, the report said: "Although pupils understand the importance of respect for all, they do not benefit from a well-planned curriculum in order to learn about the wider world. Consequently, pupils have a limited understanding of important ideas such as democracy and diversity."

Our Lady of Walsingham Primary School have been approached for a comment but are yet to respond.
