Ofgem has issued a warning to people who might be thinking about swapping their energy meter to save money.
The government regulator posted on Facebook on Tuesday to warn against making the move. It said there had been multiple reports on social media which claim people can save money by changing the energy meter without permission from your supplier - this is false.
Ofgem warned this is illegal and could be dangerous. A spokesperson said: "You can't 'swap your energy meter' to save money. There are reports on social media you can save money by changing your energy meter without permission from your supplier. This is illegal and could be dangerous."

According to Citizens Advice, people may be able to have their gas and electricity meter moved if they are finding it difficult to read or access the meter or if they are doing building work. Who can move the meter depends on the work that’s involved, however you cannot move the meter yourself as it is illegal.
If people want their meter moved they should contact their supplier. The supplier will decide if they can move it, depending on where the meter is now, how far they want it to be moved, the type of connector if it's a gas meter and why people want to move it.
If the work can be carried out, the price of how much it will cost will be given by the supplier. However, if someone is a priority customer and they need their pre-payment meter moved because they're finding it hard to read or access it, they need to tell their supplier and it should be moved for free.
A priority customer includes those who are a pensioner, someone suffering from a long-term illness, disabled or if someone is on the supplier’s Priority Services Register.
