Authorities have taken the decision to release more water from the Medard Reservoir into the Alafia River in Valrico, Florida, in an effort to prevent the dam from breaking. This action comes as the river is already flooded due to the effects of the recent storm, Milton.
The Southwest Florida Water Management District, responsible for flood protection, stated that the additional water release is necessary to safeguard the structural integrity of the dam. Failure to do so could pose a greater risk to residents living downstream, as per a recent news release.
Despite concerns raised by residents experiencing flooding in the area, the water authority assured that the amount of water being released into the Alafia River is less than 1% of the total flow. The Alafia River, situated in Lithia, approximately 13 miles southeast of Valrico, is expected to reach a crest of about 25.5 feet on Friday night, according to meteorologists.
Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister issued a warning to residents living near creeks and rivers, advising them to evacuate due to the anticipated worsening of river flooding throughout the day. Some residents, like John Taylor, expressed frustration over the timing of the water release, suggesting that it should have been done before the storm hit to prevent such rapid rises in water levels.
Taylor highlighted the dangers posed by the sudden increase in water levels, emphasizing the need for better planning and coordination in managing reservoir releases to mitigate the impact on local communities.
