Officials make selection for art piece in front of Lexington jail

A Kentucky artist has been chosen to create a sculpture piece to be located near the Fayette County jail.

Louisville artist Dave Caudill will produce the original sculpture for the green space at the entrance to the Detention Center. Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton says the piece, to be called “The Birth of Hope,” will recognize the human growth, dignity, and value of individuals incarcerated at the jail. Gorton says the proposal is also a tribute to the spirit of those working at the facility, their families and the families of inmates.

Caudill creates artwork for public, corporate, and private collections.

Caudill’s larger public works in America are found in Louisiana’s Rip Van Winkle Gardens, East Tennessee’s Horizon Center Park, and the University of Kentucky’s Singletary Center for the Arts. It’s expected to be installed in late 2024.

“The Birth of Hope” is expected to be installed in the Old Frankfort Pike corridor by the end of this year.
