Offices above old Aldi supermarket to be transformed

A developer is looking to convert office space above an old Aldi supermarket in Nottingham into a recreational area for students. The supermarket had operated on the ground floor of The Glasshouse, in Huntingdon Street, before it closed in August 2021.

Above the former supermarket is office space on the first floor, which has been up for lease for £105,000 per year. Developer Inspired Projects is now seeking permission for a change of use for this area from Nottingham City Council.

Planning documents say Inspired Projects is looking for a change of use “from commercial use (Class E) to student recreational and social facilities”. There are more than 1,500 students living in the immediate vicinity, including in The Glasshouse.

According to Nottingham Trent University it offers a wide variety of room options, flats include en-suite rooms, studios, and rooms with shared bathroom facilities. The accommodation costs between £125 and £215 per week.

New recreational space, if approved, will compliment the existing accommodation. The area the Aldi supermarket inhabited is roughly 14,000 square-foot in size.

It remains up for lease following the German retailer’s departure almost two years ago.
