A welfare check on a 97-year-old woman in California led to the discovery of her body in the trunk of her grandson' car, after authorities were told she had just taken an Uber.
On Friday, neighbors on the 4200 block of American River Drive in Sacramento became concerned after not seeing the elderly woman for several days and contacted law enforcement for a welfare check, SF Gate reported.
Despite claims from her grandson, Bryan Wiggins, that she had taken an Uber to visit her son, deputies grew suspicious upon finding her home ransacked and her safes broken into.
The woman's body was found in the trunk of a car registered to Wiggins, who, along with his girlfriend, Dozsha Beckwith, is accused of forcing their way into the woman's home after she refused to let them stay.
Investigators allege Wiggins beat her to death and placed her body in the trunk. Wiggins now faces a murder charge, while Beckwith has been charged with burglary and accessory after the fact.
Both suspects are being held without bail at the Sacramento County Main Jail and are scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, January 28. Authorities are continuing their investigation to gather evidence and determine a full timeline of events.
