A police officer has been charged with assault after an incident at Melbourne's Flinders Street Station where a man was tackled to the ground.

The 36-year-old senior constable was suspended in September 2021, after footage emerged of a man being brought down by an officer at the train station.

Victoria Police on Friday confirmed the officer has been charged with recklessly causing injury, unlawful assault and common law assault, following an internal investigation into the incident.

He has been charged on summons and will appear before a court at a later date. Police did not provide an exact court location or date.

The incident occurred during a week of heated anti-lockdown and anti-vaccination protests in Melbourne.
