Off-duty police officers detain Beeston handbag thief

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery after reportedly being detained by passers-by and off-duty police officers. The woman was seen screaming for help on The Square in Beeston at around 6pm yesterday (May 1).

The two officers jumped into action when they then spotted a person being restrained on the floor nearby. It came after the woman's handbag was reportedly swiped.

A 39-year-old man was then arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery. He remains in custody this afternoon (Monday, May 2).

Detective Sergeant Matt Dumbrell, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Thanks to the help and actions of members of the public we were able to arrest a man in connection with this incident at the scene only minutes after it happened. Thankfully the victim did not sustain any physical injuries but was left very shaken by the unprovoked incident.

“Incidents like this show that even if our officers are not on duty and are going about their personal lives and everyday business that no matter what they will step in and always be on hand to help the public. Our jobs don’t end when our shift ends and I hope this reassures the public that we will always step in to help if needed.

“We are continuing to investigate exactly what happened and are carrying out CCTV enquiries and would ask anyone who may have seen what happened to get in touch with us to help us with our investigation."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Nottinghamshire Police on 101 quoting incident 627 of May 1. Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
