Ofcom clears Ally McCoist after complaints about sectarian Rangers chants

Ofcom has cleared Ally McCoist after complaints about his praise for Rangers fans.

The pundit was criticised for describing the fans as "amazing" during Rangers' 2-1 Europa League defeat to Manchester United, when some supporters were heard chanting sectarian songs.

The media regulator received 14 complaints regarding McCoist's comments on TNT Sports.

The complaints were centred on his praise for the fans, who were heard chanting "F*** the Pope and the IRA."

However, after reviewing footage, Ofcom concluded McCoist's remarks did not breach the Broadcasting Code.

An Ofcom statement said: "Complaints related to chanting by fans, and to Ally McCoist describing the supporters as 'amazing'.

"As the chants were not clearly discernible and the comment from Ally McCoist appeared to refer to the general atmosphere, our assessment found that the content did not raise issues under our rules."

McCoist's comments were made in response to TNT Sports' main commentator Darren Fletcher, who said: "I’ll let you speak about them."

McCoist replied: "They’re amazing that lot."

The night of the game, January 24, saw SNP MSP James Dornan expressing his discontent with McCoist's remarks.

He wrote on social media platform X: "Just heard everyone's favourite football pundit, Super Ally, praising the Rangers fans just as they sing F the Pope.

"Only in Scotland is this acceptable."

Despite the complaints and criticism, Ofcom found no breach of the Broadcasting Code.
