Tyrick Mitchell enjoyed another good outing for Crystal Palace against Brentford on Saturday to continue his fine season for the club and make him a serious contender as their player of the season.
The 22-year-old has played more minutes under Patrick Vieira than any of his teammates and has been one of their standout players from left-back.
He was voted the Eagles’ man of the match in their midweek trip to Norwich where he made two vital interventions to deny certain goals for Teemu Pukki before winning a penalty in the second half that Wilfried Zaha put wide.
He was on song again against the Bees on the weekend, helping Palace keep tight at the back and pitching in offensively where he could as they drew 0-0 at the Brentford Community Stadium.
Using our player ratings survey, Palace fans voted Mitchell as the team’s best performer on the day with a score of 7.5.
He was followed by goalkeeper Vicente Guaita (7) and centre-backs Marc Guehi and Joachim Andersen (both 6.9), with each recognised for their contribution to a first clean sheet in the league in 2022.
At the other end of the scale, Palace’s forwards did not score well after struggling to trouble Bees keeper David Raya for much of the 90 minutes despite having the majority of the possession.
Jordan Ayew missed the visitors’ biggest chance of the game which fell to him during the first half after being played through by Odsonne Edouard.
The Ghanaian didn’t have too long to get his effort right but he slashed it, seeing the ball fly high and wide of the Brentford goal and immediately putting his hands on his head in acknowledgement of the opportunity he’d missed.
That moment played a big part in why Ayew was given a 4.7 match rating by fans, which was only a short way off of Edouard's 5.1 just ahead of him.
The French striker scored three goals and laid on two more across his previous four league games before being dropped for the trip to Norwich in favour of Zaha.
He was restored for the game against Brentford but had very little impact from centre-forward and was replaced by Mateta in the second half.
