Odisha: Legal help sought for boy assaulted by classmates

SAMBALPUR: The Childline, Kuchinda, has written to Sason police station seeking legal assistance for a Class X student of a private school who was allegedly stripped naked and thrashed with his hands and legs tied by his classmates at the institute's hostel on April 17.

The letter states the student underwent severe mental and physical torture and that he is in constant fear, which is affecting his studies. It has also requested the police to investigate the incident and take proper action besides providing legal help to the family so that the student could continue with his studies.

"Since the school is located under Sason police station limits, we have requested them to take appropriate action in connection with the incident. It is a serious matter. We have also sent the copy of the letter to Sambalpur district collector, SP, child welfare committee and the father of the student," said Truptimayee Dash, team leader of Childline sub-centre, Kuchinda.

Though the incident had taken place in the school hostel on April 17, it came to light two days later after the boy's father lodged a complaint with the school authorities. The school has suspended eight students as an interim measure and informed the boy's father that the incident is being probed.

In the letter, the school authorities stated that they would make all endeavours to complete the inquiry as soon as possible and would hand out strict disciplinary action to those found guilty.
