The Minnesota Vikings haven’t had a winning season since quarterback Kirk Cousins was still throwing passes to Stefon Diggs and Kyle Rudolph. However, the recently released over/under odds for wins in 2022 has that changing.
According to Tipico Sportsbook, the Vikings are -130 favorites to win over 8.5 games next season. The under odds for that bet sits at +110.
They finished last season with a 8-9 overall record after turning in a 7-9 record in the previous year. Those losing seasons signaled the end of the Rick Spielman and Mike Zimmer era in Minnesota.
There’s a lot of hope that a Super Bowl-winning offensive coordinator as talented as Kevin O’Connell is capable of grabbing the head coaching reins and winning right away. He had the Los Angeles Rams offense looking like an absolute juggernaut last season, and once again, he’ll be coaching with an embarrassment of riches on the offensive side of the ball.
If O’Connell truly is the quarterback whisperer, he could speak even more life into Cousins and get the offense performing at an elite level.
Meanwhile, the defense has received an obvious boost with Za’Darius Smith and Chandon Sullivan jumping ship from the Green Bay Packers. The Vikings also drafted heavy on the defensive side of the ball in hopes of turning a corner for a unit that got shredded more often than not last season.
If everything works in unison, perhaps the team can do more than simply finish the season with a winning record. Maybe, just maybe, they can contend in the playoffs.
