Octopus Energy giving away free electric blankets to keep heating costs low for customers

Octopus Energy has vowed to help households in need this winter, starting with giving thousands of electric blankets away to keep heating costs low.

The major energy supplier has launched a brand new scheme that will see them donate thousands of blankets to some of their 3.1 million customer base. The Daily Record reports that this scheme arrives just as UK households have been hit with a new energy price cap.

The average household bill has been hiked from £1,971 to a whopping £2,500 each year. So, in a bid to save their customers some money, Octopus will be giving 10,000 electric blankets away, for free, to those who need them the most this winter.

From today, those who are signed up with the energy supplier will be invited to fill in an online form to apply for the blanket. This will likely include the elderly and those with medical conditions that require them to keep warm.

Those who don't qualify for the free blanket won't miss out, however, as they can apply for one of the suppliers 50 per cent off discount codes for the Dreamland electric blanket and mattress topper. There are 5,000 available for purchase at this discounted rate.

Octopus Energy ran a similar scheme last year giving away 8,000 blankets to those who needed them. The free blankets helped reduce the average customer’s bill by 19 per cent, the energy firm said.

Rebecca Dibb-Simkin, chief product officer at Octopus Energy, said: "Octopus is doing everything we can to help customers through the crisis. Our electric blankets scheme was just one of the measures we’ve taken to help."

Ms Dibb-Simkin said that heating an individual rather than a whole home "can save hundreds off a customer’s bill" and that they "hope these blankets can be a real difference maker".
