Former President Barack Obama recently spoke out against the reelection of former President Donald Trump, highlighting warnings from Trump's former military leaders about the potential consequences of a second term. Obama referenced statements made by individuals who have worked closely with Trump, emphasizing that these were not solely from liberal Democrats or 'woke' individuals.
During a rally in Charlotte, North Carolina, Obama specifically mentioned General John Kelly, Trump's former chief of staff, who reportedly shared that Trump expressed a desire for his generals to be as loyal to him as Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler's generals were. Obama cautioned against drawing parallels to such historical figures in politics.
In addition to Kelly, Obama pointed to other senior military figures who have publicly opposed a second term for Trump, including former Defense Secretary James Mattis and former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley. Obama criticized Trump's approach to the role of commander in chief, suggesting that Trump views the military as a tool to serve his personal interests rather than a solemn responsibility.
Obama also used the platform to endorse Democratic state attorney general Josh Stein for governor, while criticizing his Republican opponent, Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson. The former president urged his supporters to vote in favor of Stein in the upcoming election.
