O2 send out important message to those with a phone contract

Mobile network provider O2 have sent out an important message to all of their customers this week. The telecoms company is getting in touch with all mobile contract and SIM only customers to tell them of a change in their services.

O2 have said that customers do not need to anything regarding the change but need to be aware of the updated information which will come into affect next month, on June 17, 2022.

The text message from O2, which was sent out to some customers yesterday (May 25) read: "We're updating the terms of your agreement to improve your rights to cancel in certain circumstances. Update applies 17th June 2022. You don't need to do anything as this is just for your info. The change reflects new Ofcom regulations relating to the EECC."

From June 17, O2 is updating their terms and conditions due to new Ofcom regulations designed to improve customers rights. We have summarised the key changes below but consumers can find a full copy of the changes here.

The changes mean that from June 17, consumers will have more opportunities than they currently do to cancel their services when, or if, O2 makes changes to them. So, if O2 makes changes to their services, or terms and conditions that don't suit you, then you may be entitled to cancel your agreement or contract early without paying an early termination charge.

If you have the right to cancel, O2 will give you at least 30 days notice of that change and inform you of your right to cancel.

When O2 make changes, there may be some situations where consumers will be able to leave other O2 plans they have, and O2 have said they will tell people when this happens.

However, they have also added that some changes won't give customers the right to cancel their contract without paying an Early Termination Charge. These are set out in their updated terms and conditions, but in summary they include:

  • Changes to services that are allowed under their terms and conditions. For example, when O2 increase the cost of specific services, like the cost of sending out paper bills or international call rates, or if the changes are just part of providing that service;
  • Changes that are just administrative and don't have a negative effect on customers. For example, if O2 change the address they need to write to customers;
  • Changes that O2 have to make because of a change in law.

O2 have also said that customers who add on extra products to their pay monthly service or pay as you go service, like a Bolt On, can be cancelled without incurring a fee if there's a non-beneficial change to their terms.

Meanwhile, those who are looking for a cheaper deal with O2 can currently get these offers:

  • 120GB SIM for 24 months at £20 per month including unlimited minutes and texts, and six months of Disney+
  • 30GB SIM for 24 months at £15 per month including unlimited minutes and texts, and six months of Disney+ or Amazon Prime Video
  • 10GB SIM for 24 months at £12 per month including unlimited minutes and texts, and six months of Disney+ or Amazon Prime
  • 50GB SIM for 30 days at £30 including unlimited minutes and texts
