The New York Police Department is considering deploying 15 to 20 officers to Columbia University following the dismantling of on-campus encampments on Tuesday night. This decision will be based on the security needs of the university, as stated by NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey.
Both the NYPD and university administrators will collaborate to determine the most effective security measures for the campus. Maddrey mentioned during a news conference that a thorough assessment of the campus will be conducted, and officers will be deployed to ensure public safety leading up to the commencement period.
Columbia University has requested the NYPD to maintain a presence on campus until at least May 17, which is two days after the school's commencement. The university's President, Minouche Shafik, emphasized the need for order maintenance and prevention of encampment reestablishment in a letter sent to the NYPD.
