A New York Police Department inspector is facing serious charges after allegedly attempting to cover up a drunken crash involving his girlfriend and his unmarked police vehicle. Deputy Inspector Paul Zangrilli, who oversaw a precinct in Manhattan, pleaded not guilty to charges of tampering with evidence, offering a false instrument for filing, and other felonies.
The incident occurred during the summer of 2022 when Zangrilli allowed his girlfriend to drive his police car after a night of drinking. The girlfriend crashed the vehicle into a cab, and instead of reporting the incident, Zangrilli switched seats with her and tried to offer money to the cab driver to avoid exchanging insurance information.
Prosecutors allege that Zangrilli then falsely claimed he was alone in the car and on his way to work at the time of the crash. He also reportedly contacted a bar owner to erase video footage of the night spent drinking with his girlfriend.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg condemned Zangrilli's actions, stating that they were not only dangerous but also a breach of public trust. The cab driver involved in the crash settled a lawsuit against the city for $75,000 due to injuries sustained.
Zangrilli has been suspended without pay by the NYPD, and his girlfriend is also facing charges related to the incident. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding integrity and accountability, especially among public servants entrusted with ensuring public safety.
