A recently surfaced video has revealed a New York City teachers' union representative providing instructions on how to assist migrant families in avoiding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. The United Federation of Teachers (UFT) representative was heard coaching educators on ways to help undocumented immigrants evade ICE at home and in public during a Zoom session.
The video captured the representative advising that individuals should not open the door if ICE comes to their home. It was emphasized that leaving the chain on the door could be interpreted as allowing ICE in, so residents should keep the door closed and remain silent. For non-English speakers, the UFT representative mentioned the use of 'red cards,' which can be printed for free and slipped under the door when an ICE agent visits the home. The 'red cards' state in English and the residents' language that the individual does not wish to speak to ICE or allow them into the house.
While some schools in New York City are distributing these 'red cards,' others are hesitant to do so. A UFT spokesperson stated that sharing information on rights is essential for educators, students, and families to navigate a complex world, aligning with city and state guidance.

These guidelines come as New York City Mayor Eric Adams issued a memo to city agencies, including schools, hospitals, and migrant shelters, allowing employees to permit federal immigration officers onto city property if they feel threatened. The memo also warned against harboring or shielding undocumented immigrants, highlighting that it is a federal crime.
Mayor Adams clarified that the memo predates the new administration and reiterated the importance of providing employees with proper guidance to ensure their safety. Border czar Tom Homan recently warned cities and states resisting federal immigration policies, stating that sanctuary cities could face increased enforcement actions.
Homan's remarks included a willingness to take legal action against officials opposing deportation efforts. Mayor Adams expressed alignment with Homan's goals of targeting illegal immigrant criminals after a meeting in December, emphasizing a shared commitment to public safety.
