NYC Schools Chancellor David Banks To Step Down

David Banks, chancellor of New York Public schools, answers a question during a House Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education hearing on antisemitism in K-12 public

The head of New York City’s public schools system, David Banks, announced his decision to step down at the end of the calendar year amidst escalating federal criminal investigations within Mayor Eric Adams' administration. This move follows the recent resignation of the city's police commissioner, Edward Caban, who also faced scrutiny.

Banks, a former teacher and principal, has been at the helm of the nation's largest public school system since Adams assumed office in 2022. In a retirement letter, Banks stated that he had informed the mayor of his intention to resign after ensuring a successful start to the school year.

The resignation letter did not address the ongoing federal investigations involving senior Adams aides, their relatives, campaign fundraising, and potential influence peddling. Despite this, Adams expressed gratitude for Banks' contributions to the education system.

Banks' brothers, Philip and Terence, have also been under federal investigation, with their devices seized by authorities. Philip serves as the city’s deputy mayor for public safety, while Terence operates a consulting firm with ties to government stakeholders.

Adams has faced other high-profile departures, including his top legal adviser and the city’s health commissioner. However, he downplayed suggestions of an administration exodus due to the federal inquiries, stating that turnover is common in government.

Before his appointment as schools chancellor, Banks founded the Eagle Academy in 2004, focusing on educating young Black and Latino boys who were underserved by the educational system. He was praised by Adams as a visionary leader dedicated to advocating for students.

As Banks prepares to step down, the city awaits the appointment of a new head for its public school system, navigating through a period of transition and scrutiny.
