NYC Mayor Says Revealing Name of Suspected UnitedHealthcare CEO's Assassin Would Give Killer 'Upper Hand'

Authorities are closing in on the killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson but are staying mum about his identity to avoid tipping him off, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Saturday.

"The net is tightening," Adams told reporters at a Police Athletic League holiday party in Harlem, according to the New York Post.

But Adams declined to say if the assassin had been identified.

"We don't want to release that now," Adams said. "If we do, we are basically giving a tip to the person we are seeking and we do not want to give him an upper hand at all."

Adams said authorities want the shooter to "continue to believe he can hide behind the mask."

"We revealed his face. We're going to reveal who he is and we're going to bring him to justice," Adams said.

Thompson was fatally shot Wednesday morning outside the annual meeting of the UnitedHealth Group company at a Hilton hotel in midtown Manhattan by a masked gunman who approached from behind and opened fire with a silencer-equipped pistol.

The shooter got away by riding an electric bike into Central Park and is believed to have left the city on a bus shortly after the deadly ambush.

On Thursday, the New York City Police Department released surveillance images from an Upper West Side hostel that show the face of a person of interest in the case.
