New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been issued a federal grand jury subpoena as part of an investigation into corruption and illegal campaign donations. The subpoenas, issued in July, also targeted City Hall and Adams' 2021 mayoral campaign committee, requesting a variety of materials such as text messages and communications.
The investigation, which has been ongoing for several months, is focused on possible public corruption and foreign influence. While Adams was not personally served, his attorneys and City Hall's counsel received the subpoenas. The request for information covers issues related to links to Turkey and foreign travel, with investigators seeking more details on items that raised red flags.
Mayor Adams has consistently denied any wrongdoing and emphasized his cooperation with the investigation. His spokesperson reiterated his commitment to cooperating and expressed the expectation for a swift resolution to the investigation.
This is not the first time Adams has come under federal scrutiny. Last year, FBI agents seized his electronic devices as part of a separate investigation. The current probe is centered on campaign money, potential favors, and foreign influence, with a focus on Adams' chief fundraiser's home being raided by investigators.
Adams' lawyer stated that both the mayor and his campaign are actively cooperating with the investigation and are working to respond to the subpoenas. The defense team has conducted its own investigation, which they claim has not uncovered any evidence of illegal conduct by the mayor.
As the investigation unfolds, Adams, who is midway through his first term, faces potential challengers in the upcoming 2025 Democratic primary. The FBI and the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York have declined to comment on the matter.
