NWSL Expansion Process Advancing With Sophisticated Discussions

Bay Football Club

The National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) is making significant strides in its expansion process, with plans to introduce a 16th team for the 2026 season. NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman has indicated that the league is well on track to select the location and ownership group for the new team by the beginning of Q4 in October 2024.

Unlike previous expansion rounds, the NWSL is now starting from a more refined position, attracting about a dozen prospective ownership groups who have signed non-disclosure agreements. This curated approach aims to ensure that potential investors understand the expectations for investment, leading to more sophisticated discussions and advanced progress in the bidding process.

The league's recent expansion teams, Bay FC and the upcoming Boston team, each paid a substantial $53 million expansion fee, reflecting the growing value of NWSL franchises. The involvement of sports investment bank Inner Circle Sports in managing the bidding process further underscores the league's commitment to securing strong ownership groups.

With franchise valuations soaring, exemplified by the recent sale of the Portland Thorns for $63 million and the ongoing sale of San Diego Wave FC for up to $120 million, investors are increasingly drawn to the opportunities presented by the NWSL.

As the league continues to expand its presence in key media markets, including the anticipated arrival of the Boston team in 2026, there is a heightened focus on securing purpose-built facilities. The recent opening of a stadium in Kansas City dedicated to an NWSL team highlights the importance of facilities that enable teams to control revenues and expenses.

Bay FC's successful inaugural home game in front of a sellout crowd of 18,000 fans at PayPal Park in San Jose demonstrates the growing enthusiasm for women's soccer in the United States. Meanwhile, the Boston group's efforts to revamp an old high school sports stadium in a private-public partnership have faced challenges but hold promise for the future.

Overall, the NWSL's expansion process is shaping up to be a pivotal moment for the league, with a focus on attracting strong ownership groups, securing strategic locations, and enhancing facilities to support the continued growth and success of women's soccer in the country.
