NWSL 2024 Season: League Expansion, Record Signings, And Rising Competition

NJ/NY Gotham defender Ali Krieger (11) holds the trophy after NJ/NY Gotham defeated OL Reign 2-1 in the NWSL Championship soccer game, Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023, in San Diego.

The National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) is set to kick off its most significant season yet, with notable developments and high expectations shaping the upcoming 2024 campaign.

With the addition of two new expansion teams, the NWSL will now boast a record 14 teams, including Bay FC and the Utah Royals. Bay FC, led by former U.S. women's national team star Brandi Chastain, has made headlines with a world-record transfer fee for Zambia striker Racheal Kundananji. The league has also seen ownership changes, with the Portland Thorns and Chicago Red Stars under new ownership, signaling a fresh chapter for these founding teams.

One of the major highlights of the 2024 season is the new broadcast deal worth $240 million, elevating the league's visibility and financial standing. This influx of investment has led to a significant increase in player salaries and transfer fees, setting a new standard for the NWSL.

As the NWSL faces competition from international leagues, including England's WSL and Spain's Liga F, the league is doubling down on its commitment to remain the premier women's soccer competition globally. Commissioner Jessica Berman's vision includes expanding the league to 16 teams by 2026, further solidifying the NWSL's position.

Several teams have made key offseason moves to bolster their squads. Angel City is banking on its young talent, while Bay FC has made ambitious signings to make an impact in their inaugural season. Chicago Red Stars, under new ownership, are aiming for a fresh start, with star forward Mallory Swanson leading the charge.

Gotham FC, the reigning NWSL champions, have reinforced their roster with top-tier acquisitions, setting high expectations for a successful title defense. Meanwhile, Houston Dash welcomes new manager Fran Alonso and winger Cece Kizer, signaling a new era for the team.

With the NWSL season set to commence, fans can expect intense competition, strategic gameplay, and a showcase of world-class talent. The league's growth and evolution underscore its commitment to providing a platform for elite women's soccer and solidifying its status as the premier women's league globally.
