Nurse stopped to help at scene of fatal M4 crash after 13-hour shift in hospital

A nurse stopped to help at the scene of a fatal crash after a long hospital shift.

Police officers say they would like to speak to the currently unidentified nurse, who is believed to have been travelling along the M4 on her way home after finishing a 13-hour shift at Morriston Hospital in Swansea when she came across the collision and stopped to assist with CPR.

The victim of the crash, which happened on the M4 westbound between junctions 46 and 47, shortly before 8.35pm on February 18, has since been named as 41-year-old Thavarajah Sasikaran from the Waun Wen area of Swansea.

South Wales Police is continuing to investigate the collision, which involved a silver Nissan Qashqai and a pedestrian. Despite the best efforts of those who tried to save him - including the off-duty nurse - Mr Sasikaran was pronounced dead at the scene.

A statement from the force issued on Thursday (February 24) read: "We are continuing to investigate the fatal road traffic collision that occurred at 8:34pm on Friday the 18th of February 2022.

"We want to speak to a nurse who stopped at the scene and assisted with CPR.

"Investigating officers believe that the nurse had just finished a 13-hour shift at Morriston Hospital and may have been travelling along the M4 on her way home, when she came across the collision and gave assistance to the injured pedestrian."

Officers are also appealing for anyone who has yet to come forward who may have witnessed the collision or has dash-cam footage of what happened or who may have seen the victim on foot walking along the motorway to contact South Wales Police, quoting occurrence *057156.
