Nurse caught on camera dragging a frail, elderly woman to urine-stained bed has been struck off

A nurse caught on a secret camera dragging a frail elderly woman through a care home before dumping her in a urine-stained bed has been struck off from the nursing register.

Mamello Herring was filmed 'drag-lifting' 85-year-old Angelina Lanera through Claremont House Care Home, Halifax, YorkshireLive reports.

The camera had been hidden in her room by Angelina's son after he suspected she was being mistreated.

Shocking footage shows Angelina screaming and crying as Herring, along with carer Maria Jackson, manhandled the elderly woman to her bed with her underwear around her ankles.

Today Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) stripped Herring of her license and banned her from the profession for 18 months.

The decision came a year after Herring was previously sentenced to an 18-month community order and told to do 250 hours unpaid work by a judge at Bradford Crown Court last year.

The 56-year-old didn't attend the NMC hearing, but a panel took just two days to deliver their verdict.

The panel heard how Angelina was "physically frail, had reduced mobility, suffered from dementia, psychosis and was partially blind".

She used a walking frame and needed the help of two members of staff to go to the toilet.

"She also required careful and calm explanations when interventions were taking place," said the report.

But on December 1, 2018, Angelina was subjected to vile treatment at the hands of Herring and Jackson.

The pair pulled Angelina across the floor using a 'drag lift' technique as they scooped her up under the armpits. The practice is banned as it often causes injuries, but it didn't stop the two members of staff from subjecting Angelina to the humiliating act.

They then left her in her bed, covered in urine.

A day later, Micheal went to visit his mother and found her shivering and cold.

He reviewed the video footage from the camera, which he had hidden under her desk, and discovered the horrifying footage.

Angelina sadly passed away a year after the horrendous act and Michael told YorkshireLive the incident was like "hell". It even left him needing counselling.

He was also adamant that the convictions handed to Herring and Jackson should have been far tougher.

"They should be made to clean the most disgusting toilet with crap in it with a toothbrush," he said last year.

"That would be my just punishment."

Speaking after the NMC's verdict on Thursday, January 27, he added: "Justice has been served.

"I'm happy she has been punished for what she has done and glad she can't do this to anyone else.

"Anybody who puts her name into a search engine will see it.

"It will stop her doing this to other people."

Ahead of the hearing, Herring submitted evidence to the NMC investigation in which she admitted her actions were "entirely unacceptable and reprehensible", but added she was under a great deal of stress.

But the panel said the incident was "a gross breach of the standards expected of a registered nurse".

They also found that Herring had been involved in a previous incident in 2013 when she hoisted a patient from the floor to their bed after a fall and had then failed to call emergency services, check on the patient or document what happened.

"If Herring were allowed to return to unrestricted practice, she would present a risk to the health, safety and well-being of the public," added the report.

"The nature of her conviction is of the gravest nature and raises fundamental concerns about Herring’s professionalism."

Herring, Rossefield Place, Bramley, had worked at the care home since 2014, but she has now been barred from working with children or vulnerable adults.
