A series of unexplained bone fractures in newborns at a Richmond hospital's neonatal intensive care unit has left families seeking answers. The victims, all boys, suffered different injuries with no apparent commonality other than their gender. Henrico Doctors' Hospital closed its NICU on Christmas Eve following a spate of unexplainable fractures, prompting an internal investigation.
Erin Elizabeth Ann Strotman, a 26-year-old registered nurse, was arrested on charges of malicious wounding and child abuse in connection with one incident. Police are probing six additional cases, including that of the Hackey family's son, Noah, who sustained a fractured tibia in 2023.
Contrary to social media speculation, only two of the victims were Black, dispelling claims of racial targeting. Dominique Hackey, Noah's father, has been vocal about his son's ordeal, shedding light on the broader issue. He expressed shock upon learning that Strotman had been placed on paid leave earlier, indicating prior suspicions of wrongdoing.
The hospital, cooperating with authorities, has provided extensive surveillance footage. Measures such as 24-hour video monitoring and restricted staff access have been implemented to enhance security. Hackey, along with other affected families, is seeking legal recourse as they strive to move past the traumatic events.
