Number one NFL Draft contender Bryce Young makes worrying decision during pro day

Bryce Young impressed scouts during his Alabama Pro Day on Thursday as he threw in front of a number of NFL head coaches for the first time.

Young chose not to throw during the NFL's Scouting Combine earlier this month, while the three other quarterbacks who he is contending with did all impress on March 5.

The former Heisman Trophy winner has been earmarked as a possible contender to be drafted first overall, but many are said to be worried about the 21-year-old's measurables.

The big question surrounding Young is his diminutive build, officially standing at 5'10 - and believed to be playing at around 185lbs.

During the Scouting Combine, Young weighed in at 204lbs and chose not to work out. Many have surmised this as the quarterback looking to have that weight next to his name as his playing weight - one similar to former first overall draft pick Kyler Murray.

However, it is highly expected that Young would be nowhere near that during the season, and would not be able to be at his athletic best at that weight.

And while he impressed scouts on Thursday, Young did not weigh in - only adding fuel to the fire that the quarterback could be at around 185lbs - making him the smallest quarterback in NFL history.

ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay has reported that he spoke to one team who stated that they would be "scared to death of drafting Young" because of his size.

The height of a quarterback has and always will be an issue for talent evaluators. A lack of height potentially hampers their ability to see the field, or throw into the middle, over the top their offensive lineman - who could be as tall as 6'8.

That's an issue Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson and Arizona Cardinals quarterback Murray have dealt with and been criticised for throughout their careers so far.

And while both have incredible seasons at times, Young does not possess the athleticism and speed that either Wilson or Murray had to escape pressure, with the ex-Alabama man looking to avoid pressure with his pocket presence.

As well as the height, weight is another issue for Young - who could weight as much as 30lbs less than Wilson.

Young had been dominant in his final two years at Alabama, after winning the National Championship in his freshman year as Mac Jones' back-up. He took the starting spot the following year and won the Heisman Trophy - college football's MVP award - before following that up with another tremendous season in 2022.
