National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy announced on Wednesday that the agency has successfully retrieved the voyage data recorder from the ship involved in the Francis Scott Key bridge collapse in Baltimore.
The voyage data recorder captures crucial information such as the vessel's speed and location. Homendy mentioned that the recorder has been sent to a lab for analysis, which will enable investigators to create a detailed timeline leading up to the bridge collision.
In addition to understanding the events preceding the incident, Homendy emphasized the importance of examining post-collision actions, including any distress signals, evacuation procedures, and notifications.
The NTSB's current priority is to secure perishable evidence from the Dali cargo ship, which remains trapped beneath the debris of the collapsed bridge. Efforts are underway to access the vessel and retrieve any relevant electronics or documents that could aid in the investigation.
