One of the recorders recovered from the regional jet involved in Wednesday’s collision has sustained water intrusion, according to National Transportation Safety Board Member Todd Inman. Inman mentioned that water intrusion in recorders is not uncommon and is something they frequently encounter in their investigations.
The cockpit voice recorder was exposed to ionized water overnight, and the investigative team took measures to remove the moisture by placing it in a vacuum oven. Inman explained that they are currently inspecting the electric connections to ensure they are prepared for the data download process.
Despite the water intrusion, Inman expressed confidence in their ability to retrieve the data, emphasizing that it is just one of the many steps they will take to access the information stored in the recorder. He assured that they are committed to working through the necessary procedures to obtain the data successfully.
Alongside the cockpit voice recorder, the flight data recorder recovered from the incident was reported to be in good condition, providing hope for valuable insights into the circumstances leading up to the collision.
