The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is an independent federal agency tasked with investigating civil aviation accidents in the US and significant events in other modes of transportation. Established in 1967, the NTSB has a broad scope of responsibilities that include railroad, transit, highway, marine, pipeline, and commercial space investigations.
With an annual budget of $140 million and approximately 400 employees, the NTSB operates from its headquarters in Washington, DC, as well as regional offices in Aurora, Colorado; Federal Way, Washington; and Anchorage, Alaska. Over the years, the agency has conducted investigations into more than 153,000 aviation accidents and numerous transportation incidents.

In addition to its investigative work, the NTSB also provides support to survivors and family members affected by transportation incidents. This assistance is a crucial aspect of the agency's mission to ensure the well-being of those impacted by accidents and events within its jurisdiction.
NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy has been a key figure within the organization since 2018. Initially nominated by President Donald Trump to fill a one-year vacancy, Homendy was later re-nominated for a full term in 2019. Subsequently, she was nominated as chairwoman in 2021 and 2024 by former President Joe Biden, highlighting her continued leadership within the NTSB.
