A 29-year-old woman is in a "critical but stable condition" after an alleged hit-and-run incident in the Darwin's CBD this morning, police say.
NT Police Senior Sergeant Joshua Cunningham said emergency services were notified of an incident involving a pedestrian at the intersection of Tiger Brennan Dr and McMinn St about 4am.
"An Indigenous female has been run over," Sergeant Cunningham said.
"The vehicle failed to stop after the accident."
Sergeant Cunningham said police were able to track down the vehicle — and the man alleged to have been driving it — about 45 minutes later.
He said a witness "captured most of the incident" and reported it to police, who were then able to find locate the vehicle using CCTV footage from Darwin's CBD.
A 27-year-old man has been arrested and is in police custody.
Detective Senior Sergeant Cory Borton said the man is likely to be facing a charge of "hit and run causing serious harm."
"If he had [stopped] at the scene and actually reported the incident and provided assistance to the female that he'd run over, then likely the offence would be significantly less than the 10 years that he's now looking at," he said.
Senior Sergeant Borton said initial testing for drugs and alcohol had returned negative results and that the driver wasn't speeding.
The injured woman was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital in a "critical but stable" condition, he said.
Meanwhile, the inbound lane of Tiger Brennan Dr will be closed between Garramilla Blvd and McMinn St this morning.
Sergeant Cunningham said the lane was likely to be closed until around 10am while major crash detectives investigated.
