NT police officer charged with 58 child abuse material offences indicates he will plead guilty

NT Police say the man has resigned. (ABC News: Hamish Harty)

A Northern Territory police officer has indicated he will plead guilty to 58 child abuse material offences.

The man in his 30s appeared before a Northern Territory local court on Thursday.

He is charged with the following offences:

  • Forty-seven counts of using a carriage service for child abuse material
  • Eight counts of transmitting indecent communication to a person under 16 years of age
  • Three counts of possessing or controlling child abuse material

Nine additional charges were withdrawn and dismissed.

The maximum penalty for using a carriage service for child abuse material is 15 years imprisonment.

Transmitting indecent communication to a person under 16 can attract a penalty of seven years in jail.

The man appeared in court in November last year.

At that time he was charged with nine child abuse material offences.

He was granted bail, which was sought by his lawyer on the basis of "previous good character".

The conditions of his bail included not using devices with access to the internet, not to be in the company of anyone younger than 16 without an adult, and not to loiter in or near a place frequented by children while children are present.

On Thursday, the judge continued the his bail under the same conditions.

The matter has been committed to the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory on August 24.

The defendant has been excused from appearing in court on that date.

In a statement, NT Police said the man had resigned from the force.
