Police are investigating the death of a man in a single vehicle crash in a remote part of the Top End on Saturday night.

In a statement issued this afternoon, NT Police said officers had been called to the crash on Marindja Road in Rakula, near Litchfield National Park, at about 11.30pm.

NT Police and St John Ambulance attended, but a male passenger who had been travelling in the vehicle died at the scene.

"It is believed a utility vehicle, carrying seven people, was travelling along Marindja Road, when a passenger in the tray has fallen off," the statement said.

"The passengers have transported the victim out of the area until they could reach phone reception on Litchfield Park Road."

The NT Police Major Crash Unit is investigating the incident.

NT Police have reported that the 35-year-old driver of the vehicle has been breathalysed and tested positive for alcohol.

He is expected to be charged later today.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
