A 51-year-old woman has been left with life-threatening injuries after a hit-and-run incident in Darwin's CBD on Tuesday night.

The woman, who was lying on the road, was struck by a vehicle just after 8pm on Lindsay St, between the intersections of Woods St and Cavenagh St.

NT Police said detectives have since seen CCTV footage that captured the vehicle driving over the woman before fleeing the scene.

"From the footage we've reviewed so far, the vehicle appears to be a late-model white Toyota sedan," Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said.

NT Police has appealed to the driver to "do the right thing now and contact police".

"It is only a matter of time before we identify your vehicle," Senior Sargeant Lindner said.

"We also appeal for any witnesses who saw the woman on or near the road before the crash [to come forward] to understand how and why she came to be positioned on the road initially."

The woman remains in critical condition in Royal Darwin Hospital.
